Convert an animated GIF into an MP4 video and watch the file size collapse. GIF is one of the least efficient formats still in daily use: 256 colours per frame, no compression between frames, and a few seconds of animation that balloons to 5 or 20 MB. H.264 video only stores what changes from one frame to the next, so the same animation usually lands 90 percent smaller with better colour.
That gap matters where it costs you. Instagram does not accept GIF uploads at all. Discord and Slack enforce file size limits that a mid-sized GIF blows through immediately. A web page loading a 12 MB GIF above the fold pays for it in Core Web Vitals, while the same clip in a looping video tag is barely noticeable.
You can leave the frame rate and resolution on source and get a faithful copy, or lower them deliberately: dropping to 15 fps and 480p shrinks a bulky animation further when it is headed for a chat window rather than a full-screen player. There is no audio track either way, since GIFs have never carried sound.
File size: Expect the MP4 to be roughly 90 percent smaller than the GIF: a 10 MB animation usually lands under 1 MB. Lowering the frame rate or the resolution pushes it further down.
Quality: H.264 encoding preserves the colours present in the source. It cannot restore what the GIF palette already discarded: a GIF holds at most 256 colours per frame, so banding baked into the original stays in the video.

Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
A GIF stores each frame against a 256-colour palette with no knowledge of the frames around it. H.264 predicts motion and stores only the differences, in full colour. Ten to twenty times smaller is a normal result, not an optimistic one.
Will the video still loop?
An MP4 carries no loop instruction of its own. On a web page you add it yourself with a looping video tag. On social platforms the player decides, and most of them loop short clips automatically.
Does Instagram accept this file?
Yes. Instagram refuses GIF uploads and expects video, so MP4 is exactly what Reels, Stories and feed posts are built around.
No. The GIF format has no audio track, so the MP4 comes out as a silent video. That is expected, not a fault in the conversion.
Should I change the frame rate or the resolution?
Leave both on source unless you have a reason not to. Lowering the frame rate to 15 fps or the resolution to 480p shrinks the file further and is a sensible trade for a clip destined for a chat window. For anything that will play large, keep the source values.
Is the animation smoother after conversion?
It often is. Browsers throttle GIF playback inconsistently, while video decoding is hardware-accelerated on essentially every device. The timing also becomes precise rather than approximate.
What happens to my file after conversion?
It is deleted from our servers automatically within two hours, together with the MP4 we produced. No account, no storage, no sharing. Files up to 100 MB are accepted.
